MAKE MUSIC NY - BROOKLYN STYLE!!

TODAY IS JUNE 21st!!
that means it's MAKE MUSIC NY DAY!!

Make Music New York is a live, free musical celebration all across
New York City that takes place each June 21 — the longest day of the year.

On that day, hundreds of public spaces throughout the five boroughs — sidewalks, parks, community gardens, and more — become impromptu stages for over 1,000 free concerts. Musicians of all ages, creeds, and musical persuasions perform for new audiences, who come out from under their headphones to hear unfamiliar groups risk-free on the first day of summer.

Dont miss it!!!

Here in Brooklyn We ran across our first of many of these performances
that we will be enjoying today

it was the father Daughter duo of Carolyn & Jay Leonhart at
"Green in Brooklyn" on Myrtle ave in Ft Green Brooklyn

the set was WONDERFUL, as the sound of Jay's combination upright bass & scat playing style peeked from under the warm blanket of sound his daughter Carolyn's incredibly mesmerizing and soulful voice covers you in.

they walked through a few covers and originals including a great version of Charles Mingus' late 40's standard "Take a Chance With Me"

And from Carolyn's own 2005 release "New 8th day" here is her rendition of
her fathers' "Sometimes I think"
from his 1991 outing "Salamander Pie"
it's a thoroughly enjoyable romp through the soul tinged Jazz vocal style
that her predecessors like Ella Fitgerald made popular.

Jay even stepped out front on another original called "Me & Lenny" a song about a chance meeting with the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein,
from Leonharts 2003 musical comedy "The Bass Lesson"
